Episode 9 – How to Write Your First AASB S2 Climate Report

Host in a studio with a microphone on a boom arm and warm red overlay; episode header for'Episode 9' of the podcast.

Module Overview

Most first-time reporters try to write a perfect report, and when the data falls short, they hide the gaps. Assurance reviewers don’t penalise honest gaps. They penalise hidden ones.
AASB S2 doesn’t require perfection in year one. It requires disclosure that is structured, transparent and defensible. In this final module of the ASRS climate reporting series, I bring the previous eight episodes together and show you how to put your first report on paper. It includes the structure we use with clients, realistic page lengths, four ways to handle data gaps credibly, and the writing principles that make a report readable to your board.
I also walk through how our case study company, Limon Pty Ltd, built a 42-page report that came through limited assurance with feedback on its clarity and improvement roadmap.
Year one sets your benchmark. Assurance only gets more rigorous from here.

What you’ll learn

By the end of this episode, you’ll be able to:

  • Structure your first AASB S2 report across the four disclosure pillars, with realistic page lengths for each section
  • Explain what limited assurance tests in year one, and use that runway before requirements tighten
  • Disclose data gaps in a way that builds credibility with assurance reviewers
  • Document estimation methods and materiality judgements so they stand up to review
  • Build a data quality and improvement table, often the most reviewed content in a limited assurance engagement
  • Write narrative sections a non-specialist board member can read and act on
  • Connect strategy, risk management, metrics and targets so the report reads as one coherent story

Key topics covered

  • What goes into the report
  • Year one limited assurance, what it tests and what it doesn’t
  • A section-by-section report structure, 30 to 45 pages of substantive content
  • Four ways to handle data gaps
  • The methodology appendix and data quality table
  • Writing principles
  • Case study: How Limon Pty Ltd’s first report came together
